What Causes Acne Scars

Acne is a constant worry, especially for teenage girls, as it appears suddenly and its scars stay long after the acne is gone. Howsoever you abhor it, acne is an undeniable part of most teenagers’ lives and a lot of effort must be put behind fighting these ugly little things and preventing their recurrence.

Acne is caused due to a reaction between bacteria and sebum released by the glands found in skin, giving rise to an infection. As the condition starts to heal, collagen, which is a protein, is created in the inner surface of the skin. If collagen is in excess, it results in a swelling, and if it is deficient, it causes small depressions on the surface of the skin. Acne scars appear in both these cases. Teenagers are usually most prone to acne as the hormone levels increase during puberty causing more sebum discharge.

Among the typical causes of acne infection are use of beauty products that are not suitable to the type of skin, taking contraceptive pills, intake of medicinal drugs, and genetic factors. Numerous lifestyle aspects including diet that is not healthy enough and mental stress can also cause acne. However, contrary to common belief, there is no scientific link between spicy or fast food and acne.

In spite of availability of numerous herbal cosmetics and ointments for the treatment of acne available in the stores, it is better to consult a skin doctor if the infection aggravates or appears again and again. It is also better not to pierce the acne with pointed objects or to press it as it makes the infection get worse.

A number of affected people now go for various cosmetic treatments to make the scars disappear and get a glowing skin. Along with surgical procedures and laser treatment that are two of the most successful cures in making acne scars go away, there are a number of other innovative therapies too. You must see a reputed dermatologist who would be able to determine your type of skin and suggest a proper treatment.
